It has been a long standing joke within my circle of friends and family, that at 40 something I can’t cook.
Don’t get me wrong l have tried and l come from a line of great cooks in my family but I just can’t do it. I get timings wrong and we end up with burnt dinners, or within a meal some foods are cooked but others are raw/hard or ill try my hand at making some concoction and it will taste foul that we will end up ordering take out (oh dear 😅 ).
I can always predict that for Christmas I will always be given a cook book as a gift as some cruel funny joke.
I will follow a recipe in a cook book and still it doesn’t taste satisfying and my eldest will be heading to the cupboard to grab something else to eat “but dinner was lovely thank you” he will say with a smile on his face.
How my children have survived l do not know. Oh I do ….. my husband.
This is not a middle aged thing this has followed me through life… I was the student /single person living off bowls of crunchy nut and fish finger sandwiches for a long time.
However …. Let me don my apron, take out an appliance I need, delve into the cupboard to see what ingredients we have and I will bake you something.
Baking is not cooking, in my eye and this a discussion l will have frequently with my mother in law. Who is an amazing baker and cook.
There is something about having all those ingredients and bringing them together to make something delicious. I am completely nerdy about food science and how everything happens for a reason and how you miss something so slight you could have a soggy bottom- Mary Berry.
How the smell of something you bake can be so emotive and transport you back to a distant memory and just make you smile and feel good. All the appliances/equipment l can buy to help me bake because Amazon is my friend and my post man hates me.
Baking is my happy place, collect what l need, kick off my shoes and turn up the music to dance and sing while l create something l hope to be delicious.
As this is where my love of food photography joins my baking adventures, documenting how the ingredients that have been chosen have come together in a clever and fun way to make something delicious to be enjoyed by all.
