I bet if you make these cheese straws they will not last long in your house as they certainly didnt in mine, and l dont mind admitting it was l that ate most of them. This is the thing with cheese straws they are so addictive and when you have a dip to accompany them as well .... they're gone.

Cheese straws are simple to make and can be made within 20 minutes, fit for any occassion. This recipe is easy to follow for you to make these for a particular event or like us today we made for lunch.

I recommend using a mature cheese to really impact the flavour and even though l love them hot from the oven, they are at their best when they have cooled down. Eat them alone or with a dip. They make the perfect snack or addition to a sandwich lunch.

Let us know what you think.

Enjoy!

Cheese Straws

Prep time: 10 minutes                  Cook time: 10 minutes                 Makes:  18 Cheese straws

Ingredients

80g of Self raising flour

80g of Grated cheese and extra 20g for spreading over the straws

40g of Butter

1 Egg

1 tbsp of Milk

1 tsp of Mustard

1/4 tsp of Salt

Equipment

Mixing bowl

2 baking trays

Greaseproof paper

Fork

Pastry brush

Rolling pin

Pizza cutter

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C and line the two baking trays with the greaseproof paper.

  2. In the mixing bowl place the flour, butter, salt and mustard. Using your hands begin to rub the ingredients together to form breadcrumbs, this should take a few minutes.

  3. Once breadcrumbs are formed add the egg and grated cheese. Using the fork, mix the ingredients together until they combine. You will need to use your hands to make a dough and roll into a ball ready to roll out for the straws.

  4. On the work surface sprinkle some flour and onto the rolling pin to ensure the pastry does not stick to it. Using the rolling pin, roll out the dough until it is 3mm thick.

  5. When the dough is at the correct thickness, use the pizza cutter to make thin strips to form the cheese straws and place on the baking trays.

  6. Cover each of the cheese straws with milk using the pastry brush and sprinkle the remaining cheese on to each of them before placing in the oven for 10 minutes to bake.

  7. Once baked, leave on the tray and allow to cool or serve warm with a tomato relish.

  8. Enjoy!.
